Feedback is one of the basic elements of effective communication. But do we always offer criticism in the best way possible? Courtney Seiter’s recent article in Fast Company gives us some insight into The Art And Science Of Giving And Receiving Criticism At Work. Great news for those out there who are thin-skinned and/or less than tactful.
In the article, Seiter gives us some background on criticism in general, where criticism affects us on Maslow’s Hierarchy Of Needs, and how to offer criticism in the best way possible. He also offers some criterion for offering effective feedback.
7 CRITERIA FOR EFFECTIVE FEEDBACK
- The feedback provider is credible in the eyes of the feedback recipient
- The feedback provider is trusted by the feedback recipient
- The feedback is conveyed with good intentions
- The timing and circumstances of giving the feedback are appropriate
- The feedback is given in an interactive manner
- The feedback message is clear
- The feedback is helpful to the recipient.
Seiter also includes a fun image of what a “constructive criticism sandwich” looks like.
All good advice for communicating effectively with your team.
